The city of Kaunas sits on the confluence of the two largest rivers in Lithuania - river Neman and river Neris. In the period between WWI and WWII when Poland seized Vilnius, Kaunas served temporarily as Lithuania's capital city.
Kaunas was also the historical center of Lithuanian economic, academic and cultural life. It was the first city in Central and Eastern Europe to be given the designation UNESCO City of Design.

The highlight of Kaunas old town - Kaunas Town Hall Square and at the heart of it, the 16th century all white Town Hall building whick looks more like a church. In the olden days, parts of the Town Hall building have been used as a prison. Today, it houses a museum as well as the tourist information office.
St Francis church and Jesuit monastery is also at the Town Square. This church was built by the Jesuits in the late 1600s.
Maironis Lithuanian Literature Museum, formerly the mansion of a Lithuanian poet who is also a Catholic priest, Jonas-Maciulis Maironis.
Maironis was also known to have led efforts to restore the use of the Lithuanian language. In 1909, when Maironis was a rector at the Kaunas Priest Seminary, he replaced the use of Polish with Lithuanian at the seminary.
Memorial for Ladislas Starevich, a cinematographer of Russian Polish descent and the first person in the world to create a puppet animation film. The Beautiful Leukanida is a film about two bugs fighting over a beautiful female bug. Aptly, the plaque above is decorated with a grasshopper and ants.

St Nicholas Church and the Benedictine monastery, built in the 15th century.

Once a plain looking house, the owner house of this house sitting right at the point where Krisciukaicio street curves into Lunkuvos street, decided to paste the facade of the house with pieces of mirrors.
