The city of Kaunas sits on the confluence of the two largest rivers in Lithuania - river Neman and river Neris. In the period between WWI and WWII when Poland seized Vilnius, Kaunas served temporarily as Lithuania's capital city.
Kaunas was also the historical center of Lithuanian economic, academic and cultural life. It was the first city in Central and Eastern Europe to be given the designation UNESCO City of Design.
