Pakistan - Travelling from Taftan to Quetta

The escorted drive from Taftan to Quetta of about 600 km took three days and two nights to complete. 

On the first day, we crossed the border from Iran to Pakistan at noon but were not allowed to drive further. We stayed the night at the Levies Station in Taftan. 

On the second day, we started very early in the morning to cover the 300km drive to Dalbandin. Newly paved, straight road , with barren land interspersed with sparse scrubs and a lone tree or two most of the way. No villages or hamlets only Levies posts or Army camps....where we have to register ourselves and get a change of escorts

Iran Pakistan border crossing at Mirjaveh / Taftan border

25 Jan 2019 - We crossed the border between Iran and Pakistan at the Mirjaveh/Taftan border today.

We completed the formalities on the Iran side - pretty straight forward, got our carnet and passport stamped, customs inspected our Sorento and we were not asked to pay for anything. The touts were kept at bay by a kind Iranian tourism official at the tourist office at the border. We then made our way to the Pakistan side.

Turkey - Cobandede Bridge near Koprukoy village, Erzurum

We were travelling on the D100 eastward from Erzurum to Horasan and came across this bridge about 1km outside of Koprukoy Village. We decided to look around and have our lunch break here at the same time.

We had actually travelled on this road back in August 2012 but had somehow completely missed this bridge. Maybe, it did not stand out then as it did today against the blanket of snow.

Turkey - White Christmas in Turkey... our Sorento buried in snow..

Location: Akkus, Turkey

It's Christmas day, we find ourselves driving north on the D850 from Niksar heading in the general direction of the seaside town of Ordu, 200 km North, on the Black Sea coast.

At Akkus, as it was getting dark, the snow fall heavier and the road getting icy, we decided to not continue driving in the snow on a rural road. The weather forecast was showing more snow and strong wind reinforced our decision. For our own safety, we decided to spend the night at Akkus.

Akkus is about 1,300m above sea level and is located at the foothills of Mount Argan in the Canik range. For a good four to five months in a year, this district is covered in snow, for the remainder it is mostly foggy and rainy.

As we slept, it continued to snow throughout the night, occasionally the winds getting gustier.

Italy, Northern Italy, Lake Resia Rechen, Furkel Pass 2018

 

Northern Italy  #1

We entered Italy at a small Mountain Village of  Reschen/Resia, near the Northern tip of Lake Resia Rechen see from Austrian Border at Naunders. Our intended destination is the Dolomite Mountain ranges in the East thence to Verona 

This drive is from the Border at Raisen to Fukel Pass near Valdarao and Pedero

Resia/Rechen Pass 1455m

Old Resia was submerged under water, when an artificial lake was created in 1950. Today, the new village of Resia is located up on the Pass itself, connecting Austrian Tyrol with Italy's South Tyrol.
