Turkey - White Christmas in Turkey... our Sorento buried in snow..

Location: Akkus, Turkey

It's Christmas day, we find ourselves driving north on the D850 from Niksar heading in the general direction of the seaside town of Ordu, 200 km North, on the Black Sea coast.

At Akkus, as it was getting dark, the snow fall heavier and the road getting icy, we decided to not continue driving in the snow on a rural road. The weather forecast was showing more snow and strong wind reinforced our decision. For our own safety, we decided to spend the night at Akkus.

Akkus is about 1,300m above sea level and is located at the foothills of Mount Argan in the Canik range. For a good four to five months in a year, this district is covered in snow, for the remainder it is mostly foggy and rainy.

As we slept, it continued to snow throughout the night, occasionally the winds getting gustier.

The next day, we woke early to check on Our Sorento. To our delight we find the whole town and its surroundings covered in a thick blanket of soft snow. What a pleasant surprise we.. as we had wished for a white Christmas and ....ahoooy... our wish came true... Its a real life white Christmas in the rural town of  Akkus, Turkey. Our first experience of real heavy snow... I mean real heavy, non stop  snowy Christmas... not the light snow we had experienced in Europe and the UK so far.
We were so excited we could not get back to sleep.

Not too long after...our thoughts turned to Our Sorento...will her engine start?, how do we clear the snow off her and how do we clear the thick snow that have accumulated on all sides. more than two feet thick deep. We started off by clearing the snow at the front driver door to gain access to start the engine. We also had to clear the front grill and exhaust area. Thank God the engine started on the first crank. I revved up the rpm a little to keep the rev above 1000+ rpm for a few minutes as our Sorento gradually warmed up.

We spent the next few hours watching the village waking up to the snow cocoon that have enveloped it. We watched how they cleared a path, dig out their vehicles and drive it off to work.

As the snow fall began to ease, we seized the opportunity to clear the snow that have accumulated overnight blanketing our Sorento. I used a tray to scoop the snow out of the back and front of our Sorento. We also had to clear the snow on the driver side to clear a path to get our Sorento out of her parking spot and onto the road. The snow plough that have been through this stretch of road a few times earlier had dumped snow mixed with ice on the driver's side of our Sorento. This snow mixed with ice scrapped off the road is thick and heavy, that it is difficult to scoop and push to the side.

Lucky for us an excavator came in time to help clear the heavy snow at the back of our Sorento giving dad enough space to reverse our Sorento. I could hear the ice crackle as the wheels turned.

Next, I started to clear the snow off the front of our Sorento and again the excavator came to the rescue and cleared the space in the front.

Me, my tray and the helpful excavator. Dad has already reversed into the patch he cleared  for us earlier and he is now back to clear the front.

Thank goodness for the helpful excavator! Otherwise, we will be spending hours to dig the snow out without a proper snow shovel. It is tiring and won't want a repeat of this.

After our Sorento has been rescued from her snow cocoon, Dad drove gingerly down the snow ploughed road but still covered with an inch of hardened snow, to fill up diesel. We left white Akkus at noon and headed down the hill towards the shores of the Black Sea.

Merry Christmas .....to all!
