Made it up to Ijen volcano crater.
The volcano has been emitting poisonous gas a couple of days earlier, so our 3km+ hike could only start about 3am. As a result, we missed the blue flame spectacle. Nonetheless the views are still nice and we managed to see some sulphur miners at work. No joke carrying those heavy loads up the craters steep slope.
Located in East Java, it is the world's largest acidic volcanic crater lake
It is very cold up here.
Bring a face mask too. Lucky for us, the wind was blowing the fumes in the opposite direction.
A miner with his basket. These miners dig the sulphur out with their hands and i don't see them wearing any sort of mask.
Sulphur. They carry a load of up to 100kg each trip into the crater. 1kg of sulphur earns them about IDR 1,000. Once out of the crater the miners still have to lug the blogs down the mountain.
Trolleys and basket belonging to miners. They are down in the crater, digging the sulphur blocks.
The wind is very strong up here. So, empty baskets are hooked onto the side of the hill to avoid getting blown away.
