Sarawak - Annah Rais Village

Annah Rais Village

Crystal clear river waters here. Hope it stays pristine for years to come.

Bought this pulut rice from a local lady whose husband related the significance of these pulut rice wrapped in leaves,a bidayuh practice, that he hopes will be kept alive. It's a gesture of  good luck / fortune if you consume it. Delicious even when eaten on its own. The lady only sells these on Monday.

To the untrained eye, these plants are like weeds and shrubs. They are actually used for medicinal purposes. This plant is used to chase away chicken fleas / lice (din't know chicken has fleas too!!).

This is the tongkat ali plant

This is Misai Kucing

Hill Paddy at Annah Rais Village. It's different from the paddy planted in West Malaysia in that these don't need much water to grow. The paddy planted here are mostly enough for the farmer's own consumption. Maybe that's why if you do see them being sold, the prices are quite steep.

Annah Rais is about 65km south of Kuching, the capital of Sarawak or 40km southwest of Siburan.
