New Zealand - Witness the power of water at The Chasm

A short walk from the Milford Sound Highway / State Highway 94 brings us to an amazing place carved out by mother nature called the Chasm. As we get closer, we are greeted by the sound of gushing water. From the bridge, we see nature at work. The fast flowing water from River Cleddau moving through narrow gaps causes small pebbles / stones to swirl in the nooks and crannies that they are trapped in. Overtime, they carve smooth holes on the surface of larger rocks lining the narrow gap.

Smaller rocks trapped in the holes. These will spring into action once the water level rises

At this point, the water that has been flowing downstream plummets a few metres

The crystal clear blue water makes it easy to see all the way to the bottom of the chasm. The rocky sidewall are so smooth from years of grinding
