Lithuania - Standing in the Centre of Europe...

Location: Geographical Centre of Europe, 26km north of Vilnius on A14,
                 near Purneskes village, Lithuania

When we think about the centre of Europe, Lithuania would not be the first country that comes to mind. Nevertheless, a team of French scientists from the French National Geographic Institute did carry out the calculation in 1989 and they determined the geographical centre of Europe to be in Lithuania, just a little north of its capital Vilnius.

When the team first did the calculation, this particular spot was determined as the centre of Europe.

However, they made an error in their calculation as Malta was missed out.

After a recalculation to include Malta, the centre of Europe turned out to be about 100m metres away, marked by this stone.

The Geographical Centre of Europe.
