Russia - Walking around Blagoveshchensk

Blagoveshchensk is located along the Amur River on the Russian China border. Until the end of the 1980s, the entrance to Blagoveshchensk for people from other regions of the USSR was limited, foreigners could not visit it at all.

Blagoveshchensk is 130 km west off Amur Highway R297. It is a 270km detour to visit this city.

The capital of Amur Oblast, Blagoveshchensk is an organised, pretty and clean city with wide roads and lots of parking spaces near attractions.

Just across the Amur River, is the city of Heihi, China. A new bridge will soon connect these neighboring cities.
In the winter months, temperature here gets as low as -21.5°C. The Amur River freezes over and one can walk across to China.

This three metre high bronze statue is the Monument to the Border Guards. Make a wish and with your left hand, rub the dog's nose. Your wish might just come true. At least, that is what the locals believe.
